Skyward Information

2023 updated cell phone practice (updates coming soon)

Starting September 5th, 2023, St. Anthony Middle School (SAMS) and St. Anthony Village High School (SAVHS) will be shifting technology and cell phone expectations for all students. Both schools will be shifting to a cell-phone free learning environment.

When cell phones are not in sight, students become more engaged in peer-to-peer and peer-to-teacher relationships and dialogue. Academic performance and student engagement, as well as mental health and self-regulation, increases.

Families will sign off on the no cell phone policy along with other annual forms on Skyward, and a paper version will be available to you on the night of the open house. Open house is on Wednesday, August 30. New families who have not yet accessed Skyward will have an email sent to them before open house with their log-in information.

Expectations for students

High school students will be expected to place their cell phones in a cell-phone caddy at the beginning of each class. The caddy also acts as an attendance tool with each caddy being assigned to a student. Cell phone caddies will be monitored by each teacher. Students will only be permitted to have their cell phone during passing periods and lunch.

Supporting your child during this transition

Moving to a cell-phone free environment can be challenging to some students. By engaging in a conversation with your child about their cell phone usage, you partner with us in ensuring that they receive the highest quality of education that SAVHS has to offer. Some questions to consider:

“How often do you spend on your cell phone?”
“Do you feel that the cell phone distracts from learning or peer relationships?”
“What do you notice about friends that spend to much time on social media?”
“What online/cyber bullying have you seen on social media?”

It's important that our students are at school to learn and be in community with other learners. Support your child's learning by monitoring screen time and their emotional well-being. If they seem withdrawn, engage in activities that don’t involve the cell-phone.

2023 updates to WIN time (updates coming soon)

Starting this year, Wednesday mornings will become an asynchronous, independent study time from 8-9:30 a.m. School doors will open at 7 a.m. and students who plan to work at school reporting to the building by 8 a.m.

If a teacher requests a student to be present, they will be pinged using the student support systems. Otherwise, students may work in school or at home. Students who work at school will be supervised by a teacher in the Commons. First period begins at 9:35 a.m.

Students working at home on Wednesday mornings will report to school by 9:30 a.m. and will be responsible for their own work.

More information about this practice will be available during the first week of school in your child’s classroom as well as during a school-wide assembly.

Communication to families

It's important to us that families stay updated and informed. All families are automatically added to teacher, school and district-level communication. Weekly Update: St. Anthony Village High School sends out a weekly email message to families with important notifications on your student's school. All families are automatically added to the email list.

District Update: St. Anthony - New Brighton Schools sends out a weekly email called The Brighter Bulletin which provides families with information at the district-level as well as updates from all three schools and community services.

Teacher Update: Teachers will email parents/guardians weekly with progress updates on their student.

Emergencies: When an emergency occurs (weather, situation at school etc.) our communication team sends out text messages, emails and phone calls to alert the school community of the situation. All families are automatically added to this communication.
